Don't have a Passport yet? Here's how to apply

New Passport Process

In order to travel to New Zealand you will need a passport. If you do not already have one you can apply for one at the State Department's Passport web page on the right.

Here is a breakdown of the process and tips:

  • Head to the Passport Application link on this page.
  • Use their Form Filler tool on a desktop or laptop computer. Fill out the form online and then print it. Do not sign your form.
  • Note: You will need a full passport book to get to New Zealand. The passport card is only valid when traveling to Canada or Mexico.
  • Get evidence of your US Citizenship. This can be a birth certificate, certificate of naturalization, or certificate of citizenship. This can be a photocopy but if you send the original they will send it back to you.
  • Get a photo ID. This needs to be a government issued ID like a driver's license, true ID, or trusted traveler ID.
  • Provide a photo for the passport. You can get professional photos taken but as long as it meets their size, color, and dimension requirements you are good to go. You can find those on their website. A quick google search will let you know any nearby locations that can provide you with a passport photo that meets the criteria. For example, some CVS locations do passport photos.
  • Bring your application (unsigned), evidence of citizenship, photo ID, and passport photo to your closest Passport Acceptance Facility. Most will require you to make an appointment.
  • Note: Application fees! There is a $35 execution fee to submit the application and the passport book is $130. They will take check, card, or cash.
  • Note: Passports usually arrive in the mail after 4-6 weeks after the application is submitted.

It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to.
